Time sensitive "auto update" functionality

It's clear that a noticeable battery life improvement can be obtained by being conservative about the auto update frequency of modest. I believe further improvements can be gained by implementing a time sensitive auto update toggle that disables the auto update functionality when it is unnecessary. The middle of the night is a good example. This also serves to avoid a phone not placed in silent, disturbing a sleeper and is certainly a feature I would appreciate and have investigated hacking into a fcron/alarmd call to "gconftool --type bool --set /apps/modest/auto_update true/false".
