SOFTWARE VERSION: (Settings > General > About product) 3.2010.02-8.002 EXACT STEPS LEADING TO PROBLEM: (Explain in detail what you do (e.g. tap on OK) and what you see (e.g. message Connection Failed appears)) 1. create files Test.htm and Test.html in the same directory. 2. In the file manager, browse to the directory. 3. Attempt to open Test.html EXPECTED OUTCOME: Able to distinguish bewteen the two files and select the correct file. (pretty much the minimum definition of what the file manager must be able to do) If unable to determine which file is which in the main file listing, viewing the details should resolve the ambiguity. ACTUAL OUTCOME: Unable to distinguish bewteen the two files and it requires a random guess. The main file listing shows two files as Test. Viewing the file details shows both files as type 'HTML Document', which is correct, but insufficient to distinguish them. REPRODUCIBILITY: Always EXTRA SOFTWARE INSTALLED: OTHER COMMENTS: Basically, this amounts to the fact file name base + MIME type is *not* a unique file identifier. User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux armv7l; en-GB; rv:1.9.2a1pre) Gecko/20091127 Firefox/3.5 Maemo Browser 1.5.6 RX-51 N900
Hi, what exactly is your proposal to fix this problem? Also see bug 430 which is WONTFIX...
(In reply to comment #1) Hi, I saw bug 430, but I don't think this is the same. My report says nothing about file extensions being shown or edited. Instead, I simply presented a case where the File Manager fails to distinguish bewteen two files as it required to do. Also, another topic in bug 430 discusses multiple appications associated with the same mime type (comment #10). In this case there may only be a single appliation to handle the mime type so the discussions referred to there aren't relevant. There is no issue about which application to use, simply which file to select in the first place. I really don't know the best solution, but a few possibilities are: 1) show full filename under Details 2) show extension after mime type in Details 3) update Fremantle File Management UI spec to read: "File extensions are hidden. The exception to this is unknown file types *or when ambiguities may arise due to hidden extensions* , which, if they have file extensions, will show them as an aide to identification. " 4) Update filesystem to disallow files with same filebase and mimetype and prevent ever reaching this state. 5) rename "File Manager" to "Random File Selector" :) Options 4 and 5 do not involve showing file extensions in the UI so this isn't bug 430. Obviously they may not be the best or practical solutions, so file extensions may be part of the *solution* for this bug. Cheers,

Closing as duplicate for the time being, feel free to reopen if you have a strong case that it's different. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 430 ***
Just to check my understanding of the situation: File Manager unable to manage files is WONTFIX.
