Plug and unplug earphone several times, during the period I started to play a
media file. Sound was coming off speaker even when earphone is plugged in.
Comment 2 Venomrush (reporter) 2010-02-23 17:38:08 UTC
I've just flashed both eMMC and firmware (UK unbranded variant 203) the first
thing I did was plug the earphone cable but the issue still persists.

I will get syslog of this.

Hi,
which exact wired earphone is this about?
Also, after plugging it in and out, can you provide the output of "dmesg |
tail"?

Interesting enough, I tried another earphone without microphone from my friend
and that seemed to work.

Seems like it's an issue with earphone with mics.

I cannot obtain another earphone with mics to confirm this is the case.
Comment 8 Paul Hartman 2010-02-27 00:24:40 UTC
I have the problem with everything I ever tried to plug in, including several
regular headphones, and auxiliary audio cable in my car. N900 simply does not
sense that it's plugged in. Sound comes out of N900 speaker as if nothing is
plugged in. When I remove it and and re-plug, then it detects it almost always
on the second try. It rarely works on the first attempt.

For me this has happened since original retail N900 release and has not been
fixed in any firmware update since, including 2010.02-8. At least in my case it
seems to have nothing to do with microphone since most of the time I'm not
using one.

If you always had the issue it may be because of the hw.. can you please report
the log as suggested by Andre on comment #4?
Comment 10 Maxx 2010-03-08 01:17:16 UTC
I have the same issues.

Firmware PR1.1.1

Exact Step:
Plugged the standard N900 headphone into the N900 and nothing show up.
Plugged the normal 3.5mm speakers into the N900 and everything working.
Plugged the Standard N900 headphone into the N95 and it worked! The headphone
is not broken, since it is working on my N95.

Conclusion:
N900 OS having issues.

Expected outcome:
Show the headphone applet and sound going through to the headphone.

Result outcome:
Nothing going through nor any applet show up.

I JUST REFLASHED IT TWICE.. So there is nothing installed.

The output show that the Headphone GPIO 177 is connected but yet there is no
connection being made.

It worked with standard 3.5mm jack but not with the Standard Nokia N900
headphone. Whereas it used to work last week.

thanks for the infos. To complete the analysis, there any things pertaining
only to the N900 between the hw jack an the applet icon, the dbus system is an
example ;)

it would be interesting to know if the status menu of your device was jammed
during this phase (e.g. tap on the status area and check how responsive is the
menu). My idea is that dbus messages are not caught in time from the applet and
thus it does not correctly store the system state.

Some developments have been addressed, but not yet released, about the dbus
handling in this component so what you're experiencing maybe not anymore
reproducible in newer releases.

Most of us here flash the device but still getting the issue. I flashed both
eMMC and firmware. So the status area is definately clean and smooth as similar
to when the device was first bought.

I would very much appriciate if you can attach the fix (as .deb for dpkg
installation) for the minority of us here to verify. As we would be unable to
use the Nokia's headphone for a long time if the newer release does not fix it.

Referring to Marco's comment "Some developments have been addressed, but not
yet released....so what you're experiencing maybe not anymore reproducible in
newer releases." that it has been fixed in an internal release.

"maybe".
Comment 16 Maxx 2010-03-09 00:14:12 UTC
How could this be fixed! I still have the problem on my device with the PR1.1.1
and the headphone from another phone works on it perfectly except the WH-205 on
the N900.

FYI the headphone work on other Nokia Devices. The headphone is difinately not
broken.

I've not said that. Please read again comment #11. Maybe I'm no that good with
English and I'm not 100% aware of the maemo Bugzilla policy, but is it enough
to set a bug as fixed?

Thank you for reopening this bug. I was dying of waiting for this to be fixed.
WH-205 doesn't seem to work on N900 but worked on any other Nokia N-series and
5800.

So I'm guessing the software on the N900 to detect the Audio Jack is not fully
baked. The N900 headphone (WH-205) behave differently when plugged into other
devices. In 5800 it asked what connection to be made, "headphone,
headset...etc". But it works.

If it's _never_ working you may have an issue with your HW. Agreeing with
reproducibility, it shouldn't be reproducible at least 50% of the times. In my
tests it's never reproducible.

Did you test your N900 with other headphones e.g. the ones provided with other

The N97's supplied earphone works as expect.

I did notice a very long delay when the N97's supplied earphone is plugged in
until the N900 recognises it, took more than 3 seconds.

Hope this information helps to diagnose the issue.
Comment 25 Álvaro Villalba Navarro 2010-03-12 03:25:51 UTC
The same here. I don't know when stopped to work, but I didn't flashed N900 and
now it doesn't detect the original earphones anymore, never.
Other earphones without microphone are detected without problems.
Comment 26 marco.ballesio nokia 2010-03-12 13:21:22 UTC
Thanks everybody very much everybody for the good feedback about this issue. So
we have the following:

1) The headset provided in the box together with the N900 has some issues when
coupled with the very same N900 in the box.

2) The issues are not reproducible when using the same headset on another Nokia
device.

3) The issues are not reproducible when using other Nokia headsets with the
same N900.

4) It's not reproducible with all the "same-box" samples (e.g. I cannot
reproduce it with my N900 neither can my team's testers).

The idea is thus that there are interfacing issues in your particular
N900s/headphones. It would be very interesting if you can go to a Nokia Care
shop and test your devices with another WH-205 sample. You can then get your
WH-205 replaced. Having a clean sw on the device can help in that case.

From the non reproducibility in our test environments it's also possible that
this is a sw issue that you'll not find in the next SW upgrade. It's anyway
recommended to verify the proper functioning with other WH-205 models.
Comment 27 Paul Hartman 2010-03-12 17:45:10 UTC
In my case nothing is shown in dmesg when headphone is plugged in and not
detected. It is not reproducable on-demand but happens often. For me, it does
not have anything to do with supplied N900 headphones, because I've never even
taken them out of the box, and nothing to do with reflashing or restoring from
backup because I've never done either of those things either.

It reminds me of the "USB not detected" bug that was fixed in PR1.1. It was
simply not showing anything at all in dmesg and was as if nothing was plugged
in.
Comment 28 gello 2010-07-05 12:01:56 UTC
I've still the same problems here with the original N900 headset (other
headphones and line-in connections work) and PR 1.2. Are there any workarounds
yet?

I can reproduce something very similar with the standard a/v cable. If I plug
the audio cables into my hifi amp, nothing happens. If I then short the video
cable to ground, the icon appears, as does the hifi output. A standard stereo
headphone will also short the video/mic to ground, hence they also always work.

I have also manufactured a splitter for the headset socket so that I can plug
in an external microphone, but again that isn't recognised at all, even with
headphones attached to the appropriate lines.

My guess is that the circuit detecting the video/mic line isn't working quite
right.

dmesg indicates that a headset is plugged in all cases.

A workaround using alsamixer to enable the headset might be possible but I
can't get that to work.
Comment 32 Andre Klapper maemo.org 2010-08-30 17:20:27 UTC
If you are affected by this, listing your installed 3rd party applications
(from Extras / maemo.org application catalogue, and other non-Nokia catalogues)
is highly welcome.
Comment 33 CJ Stone 2010-10-10 15:37:15 UTC
I have noticed that when plugging in the headset slowly (you should hear some
noise trough the headphones) the sound is redirected to the earpieces even
though no headphone icon appears. Mic still doesn't work.
Comment 34 Abhijit Potnis 2010-11-10 12:20:17 UTC
Hello,

I bought N900 in germany, I too face the same problem of wired earphone not
being detected. I have tested it with headphones provided with the original
packing and also with 5800 headphones, both dont work.
Looking at the dmesg: It does show that the headphone is connected when plugged
in. But I can neither here any audio from the earphone nor speak thru the
microphone. Even the icon doesn't show up on the status bar. AND Btw - the
status bar is not hung .. its very much active.
I did check plunging in normal headphone (without mike, Sennheiser HD 570) and
it works fine.
I have PR1.3 update no on the N900, but this also brings no help. I have seen
this issue right from the begining ( PR1.1 PR1.2 ).
Is it a hardware issue ?? I strongly believe so.

Regards
Abhijit Potnis
Comment 35 Álvaro Villalba Navarro 2010-11-10 19:13:36 UTC
I bought another earphone after the first one wasn't detected anymore. It is
the same model as the one that came with the N900, and after some months of use
it isn't detected as well.
So, has Nokia any official explanation for that issue? Because it doesn't seem
to be a software or an earphone flaw issue. After some use, N900 hardware makes
some damage to the earphone that turns it not detectable by the N900 devices.

What does the syslog show when you plug it in and out?
Comment 37 trydentsword 2010-11-17 02:23:24 UTC
I have been facing the same problem ever since I updated to PR1.2. N900 detects
all headphones except the factory supplied ones.
dmesg always shows Headphone to be connected. However, no sound output is
observed through the headphone.
Comment 38 Nirav Balani 2010-11-17 11:02:53 UTC
I am also facing the same problem. My N900 doesn't detectes its original
WH-205. Initially it was working good, after sometime right side of earphone
stopped working, and then after a week or so, it stopped detecting WH-205
headset.I am planning to buy new WH-205 headset. Don't know will it solve my
problem or as one of comments says like after a 3 month that new one also
stopped working. Please provide me solution, let me know is it hardware problem
or software problem.

I'm not able to reproduce the issue with PR1.3 (since its first pre-release)

Can somebody in the loop please confirm whether the issue is reproducible with

I have the same problem. Only the left headphone is working after flash to pr
1.3 (manualy).
And dmseg dont reconize any headphone when they are pluged, but the headphone
icon does appear in the quick launch bar.
If I plug another headphone it works fine (headphone without mic).
