SOFTWARE VERSION: 2.2009.51-1 EXACT STEPS LEADING TO PROBLEM: 1. Any of: 1a) Install GPE File Manager from Extras-testing 1b) Install Catorise from Extras, with your device in an English locale 1c) Have a .desktop where the Name is "Hello world from my cool app" 2. Open the application menu EXPECTED OUTCOME: That the long names "GPE File Manager", "Location & Navigation" and "Hello world from my cool app" are wrapped. ACTUAL OUTCOME: Labels are truncated. REPRODUCIBILITY: always User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.7) Gecko/20100106 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Firefox/3.5.7
Created an attachment (id=2253) [details] Screenshot showing lack of menu wrapping The problem can be seen on the Catorise screenshot here: http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/catorise/ ...and on the attached screenshot with "GPE File Manager" and "Countdown Timer" both being truncated.
Apps should probably have a shorter name in that case and a bug report - as bug 5570. There is an internal open report that the last characters should be faded out, linking against it in the Alias field. Wrapping itself will not happen though - that part is WONTFIX.
Bah, WONTFIX. I look forward to the Developer Guide being updated informing developers that, contrary to the freedesktop.org standard, there is a maximum length of around 12 characters for the "Name". This goes to show that developing fancy widgets on top of a low-level animation framework like Clutter may seem shiny, but it causes development overhead, maintenance burden and lots of edge-case bugs.
