Description Simon Budig (reporter) 2010-01-14 15:49:47 UTC
After updating to Maemo 5 2009.51-1 I accidentially skipped the PINCode dialog
on boot and tried to enter the PIN after booting. It turned out to be quite
obscure: here is what I tried:

- Entering the phone settings, since I remembered a field for the PIN there.
The settings refused to show up, since the mobile network was unavailable
(doh!)

- switching to offline and back to online mode, kind of expecting the dialog to
pop up. Did not happen.

- try to establish a mobile data connection, in the hope that the PIN dialog
would pop up. The connection icon did not show up.

- Start the phone application, expecting a popup on start. Did not happen.
Nothing interesting in the menus either.

What finally worked was to actually dial a number. *Then* finally the dialog
did show up.

That is IMHO a severe usability problem. I don't want to initiate a phone call
(which is counterintuitive anyway, since I *know* that the GSM connection is
not there) to be able to enter the PIN.

At least the PIN-field in the phone settings should be available even when no
mobile network is connected. Prohibiting this setting panel to show up is a
misfeature. And I'd fully expect more convenient ways to enter the PIN
post-boot.

No, as the Maemo 5 User Interface and Maemo 5 platform components (e.g.
libraries) are considered stable by Nokia. Only critical issues have a chance
of being addressed by Nokia.
