Description Neil MacLeod (reporter) maemo.org 2009-12-22 19:17:32 UTC
SOFTWARE VERSION:
1.2009.42-11

EXACT STEPS LEADING TO PROBLEM:

1. New email notification arrives for 2+ emails - tap on gold notification icon
2. First email opens immediately, finish reading it and tap on "<" to read next
email

EXPECTED OUTCOME:

3. Next email opens immediately

ACTUAL OUTCOME:

3. Empty white screen, "Updating *" (with "spinner") appears in window title,
often a delay of almost a minute before email is visible.

Once the email appears, pressing ">" always immediately displays the previous
email, and pressing "<" again immediately displays the email that just a moment
before took 30-60s to display.

REPRODUCIBILITY:
5/10, about 50% of the time

EXTRA SOFTWARE INSTALLED:
Firefox, Friend Status IM Aggregator, load-applet, rootsh, location-test-gui

OTHER COMMENTS:

N900 email is setup with a single Nokia Messaging account, accessing a POP
server on zen.co.uk. Email is setup to download partial message content.

I'm receiving a lot of Maemo Bugzilla email right now, the latest delay
happened when opening the email for bug 6740 comment #4.

This problem is not 100% reproducible - when a delay occurs it is not
reproducible by opening another email and then re-opening the email that
previously experienced the delay. Sometimes the delay will occur with two
emails in succession. I have experienced the delay when reading an email that I
had previously read without a problem, although there had been a considerable
delay (several hours) between the first reading (no problems) and the second
reading (delay experienced).

It's as if "something" (either fileystem or communication related) is blocking
Modest, there doesn't to be any reason for the long delays as the emails are
not complicated or large (as I say, almost always Maemo Bugzilla mail these
days!) and in some cases have been read before without any problem.

I am quite sure that bug 3762 will fix this issue.

But this is with a POP account (bug 3762 relates to IMAP), and I typically have
no more than 30 emails in the N900 Inbox at any given time. I'm not
experiencing delays when displaying the list of emails in the Inbox - I get the
delays when reading _some_ emails (and it's random chance whether an email will
experience the delay or not).

Andre - I haven't experienced any delays with 2.2009.51-1 so I'm happy for this
bug to be marked as closed/fixed. I'm surprised if bug 3762 was the fix but who
cares as long as it's fixed! :)

Great that it works for you now, and thanks for updating this.
Comment 5 Andre Klapper maemo.org 2010-01-14 12:28:33 UTC
The problem reported here should be fixed in the update released today for
public: The Maemo5 update version 2.2009.51-1 (also called "PR1.1" sometimes).
Please leave a comment if the problem is not fixed for you in this update
version.

Verifying

The slight lag is acceptable in PR1.1
