Description Chris J. burris (reporter) 2009-12-16 23:01:22 UTC
SOFTWARE VERSION:
1.2009.42-11.002

EXACT STEPS LEADING TO PROBLEM:
1. Configure and enable device for Network positioning using supl.nokia.com
(Settings->Location). Disable GPS positioning.
2. Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
4. Use Maps or other software requiring a course location of accuracy (from
network)

EXPECTED OUTCOME:
Acquire a course location fix based on data provided from the network.

ACTUAL OUTCOME:
Location fix fails to acquire

REPRODUCIBILITY:
On T-Mobile USA

OTHER COMMENTS:

Switching the server name from supl.nokia.com to supl.google.com (and rebooting
the device) allows an instantaneous fix. Switching it back to supl.nokia.com
(and again rebooting) prevents the fix from being acquired.

Can we get someone at Nokia to confirm whether the supl.nokia.com server has
valid data for T-Mobile USA towers? I had the issue in Metro New York City,
USA, but also people are far away as Seattle, WA, USA seemed to indicate issues
as well.

When I set the server to supl.google.com and pull up OVI Maps, the fix is
acquired instantaneously and it puts my position atop a near by bridge (where,
presumably the tower I am connected to is located).

Thanks for reporting this.

Having a syslog for both when it fails and when it works with supl.google.com
would be really interesting.
Can you please:
1) Install syslog (see
http://wiki.maemo.org/Documentation/devtools/maemo5/syslog ) and reboot
2) Attach the file /var/log/syslog from the device to this bug (if needed, copy
it first to the section that is visible in the File Manager:
   cp /var/log/syslog /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/)

Also confirming as per confirmations in talk.maemo.org.

Attached are the syslogs - one for using supl.nokia.com and the other
supl.google.com

I used the OVI Maps application and only had 3G enabled (no WiFi).
Comment 6 Andre Klapper maemo.org 2010-01-12 13:26:50 UTC
It seems that a few requests might currently fail in US due to bad cell
coverage and that Nokia plans to upgrade supl.nokia.com soon, after which these
problems will be decreased.
There is nothing that can be changed in the Maemo software though, so this bug
is INVALID.
