In the screenshot view, as you can see the number is displayed.

But if I enter that conversation, the full name of the contact is displayed.

And also their avatar picture is displayed.

This morning I had this problem: I turned on my N900 and I received a SMS, and
the SMS conversation view showed only the contact number, as you showed with
your attachment; but after about 3 min the contact name appeared (without
receiving any new message) and now everything seems to be normal! Are you sure
that waiting is not enough for fixing this problem?

I didn't notice. Will have a careful look when this issue arise again.

It seems after reboot, the most recent conversation displays contact's number
only. After a while waiting it shows the appropriate contact's name.

Not sure what's causing this lag, but it sure is a bug.

this has just started happening to me now .... i noticed the number was showing
as +44XXXXXX so went into the contact and changed the contacts phone number
from 0XXXXXXX to +44XXXXXXXXX and the name reapearred for that contacts
conversation!
its a big job to change all numbers from 0 to +44 though!!!
not a clue why its just started to happen now though, have not changed any
settings or anything today?
also it seems to be a permanant problem for me, the number does not turn back
into the name for me after 3 mins.

also the avatar pic is not displayed when contact name is not displayed
also for me when i go into the conversation it then displays the contacts name
and avatar while i am in the conversation but when i go out to all
conversations i see the number and no avatar!

this is a big annoyance as if this starts happening a lot when i go into my
conversations and need to find a particular conversation it will be very
difficult to find if all i see are peoples phone numbers!

Is this happening in PR1.1? I can't use my N900 right now, please test this bug
in PR1.1 and update the version field.

I suspect, a particular operator.
What do you see with other phones using the same subscription? Are SMS sender
numbers global (starting with a + and the country code) or can they be local?
Comment 13 Andrew Franklin 2010-01-22 14:28:07 UTC
always +44 on vodafone for texts but phones resolve +44 to 0 to match to
contacts (except for this bug on N900) never had a problem with any of my
previous phones

Ah, so you keep your contacts in the local number form, not international?
Comment 15 Andrew Franklin 2010-01-22 16:57:46 UTC
yes, when someone gives me a number they usually say "it's 0XXXXX" so i enter
that rather than enter +44XXX.
Think i may start entering +44

Still occurring in PR1.1
Most noticeable after reboot (adding reboot option for power user) then
received a message.

To test, turn your phone off, get someone to send you a text (from contact
list) then turn phone on again. You should be able to see the issue.

This could be the same problem as in ticket #10304, I suspect it is if more
than one contact has the same number. I have the problem with 1.2 and a Swiss
carrier. Are the UK people's incoming calls' number also showing up instead of
the contact names? Are they mobile (UK people can send SMSes to landines too if
I am correct) or landline numbers? I store the numbers in international format
(+41XXXXXXXXX).
