maemo.org Bugzilla – Bug 5139
Provide multi-user chat (chatroom / IRC) support again

SOFTWARE VERSION: Unspecified Fremantle version (relevant bits not available in SDK, sorry), based on bug 788 comment 3: > To begin with, in Fremantle IM chat rooms are not supported. This is a significant regression compared to previous versions, where multi-user XMPP chat worked fine for years. Please consider re-adding support for multi-user chat. This should be only a UI issue, as the underlying stack (telepathy, loudmouth etc) does support the functionality.
Giving a priority boost.
(Also feel encouraged to vote for this ticket in order to push it.)
Adding dependencies to all open multi-user chat bugs.
Adding bug 788 to the list, since it seens to have been closed only because of this dependency.
Telepathy Backend & Accounts UI support providing IRC, MSN, link-local XMPP and access to using Pidgin's libpurple providing lots of other options is available for Fremantle, see http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel/pool/fremantle/free/t/telepathy-* directories. What else is exactly missing? I've installed the IRC one and now I just wonder how to enter a chat room. :-/
The UI is missing...
What is the situation of this one?
The scope of bugs.maemo.org are bugs and only very specific and no-brainer enhancement requests. This report contains a feature request that is too generic for bugs.maemo.org. Please post this problem and propose your solution in Maemo Brainstorm instead: http://maemo.org/community/brainstorm/ More information: http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo_brainstorm

This report contains a feature request that is too > generic for bugs.maemo.org. This report is not feature request but regression report. Maemo4 had chatrooms support and I used it a lot. For me it is a bug that Maemo5 do not have that functionality.

Alright, let me reopen this based on the 22 votes already here and the many bugs blocked by this one. I have asked to the RTCom team.
Expected to be available at some point in Fremantle.
Good, i've just added my vote. In my opinion, this is a bug and not just a simple request
(Please avoid unneeded "me too" comments as they trigger mail to everybody subscribed here. Just vote. Thanks.)
pymucl, available from extras-devel, may be an alternative for now... although it is currently very young and buggy.

Since PR1.2 there is a "Join chat room" menu item in Conversations, allowing one to join a room by typing the room name and selecting the account to connect with. This works for joining XMPP MUCs and IRC rooms, as spartan as it is. All of the tickets blocking on this one have been closed. Is anything still missing for this ticket to remain open?
It is possible to join MUC now. But it is expected from client that it will request from server last N messages from MUC history. Most of xmpp clients do it, while telepathy on N900 doesn't. This is important feature as mobile clients lose connection more often than PC client.

Most of xmpp clients do > it, while telepathy on N900 doesn't. Added this as a MeeGo feature request: http://bugs.meego.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8281 This bug is considered fixed, as basic support for MUC has been delivered. Please file further enhancement requests for Harmattan and MeeGo.
The problem reported here should be fixed in the update that was released today for public: The Maemo5 update version 20.2010.36-2 (also called "PR1.3" sometimes). Please leave a comment if the problem is not fixed for you in this update version.
