Description Jarmo Tikka (reporter) nokia 2008-10-07 15:37:17 UTC
Problem #1
Official maemo logos at maemo trademark page are not visible either with
Firefox (2.0.x) or MS IE (7.0.x). This trademark page is from where everybody
who needs to have official maemo logo should be able to get one.

Problem #2
Based on text that can be seen on logos page (instead of maemo logos :) logos
are available only in GIF and JPG format. mameo logo needs to be available also
in some scalable format (like SVG) so that it can be used also for books (high
resolution needed) and posters (very big size needed).
Comment 1 Ryan Abel maemo.org 2008-10-07 16:31:20 UTC
Do you mean the maemo.org logo or the Maemo logo?

CCing Dave, as he's probably going to have the easiest time finding an svg.

maemo.org logo

Attaching the SVG from the mailing list.
Comment 3 Jarmo Tikka (reporter) nokia 2008-10-08 09:16:10 UTC
I tried to open attached svg version of logo with Firefox 2.0.x, IE 7.0.x
Safari 3.1.x and it did not open. I did not try Incscape because I do not have
it installed any more in my machine.

Svg version of previous maemo logo was done with Inkscape and I recommend that
also this new one is done with some tool that is generally available and
generates some reasonable standard format (inkscape http://www.inkscape.org/
being one of the best candidates for tool).

Peter Schneider (head of the marketing team) is workin on this. He edited the
old page and got rid of the old logos as a transitional step.

The Maemo trademark and its publications are in a period of transition for two
reasons:

1. The team in charge of trademarks at Nokia is reviewing the new text after
the discontinuity of the "maemo" logo and the creation of the maemo.org logo.

2. Because of the own essence of the change (maemo.org is a community driven
project separated from the Nokia official offering) the new trademark policy
actually shouldn't be published in maemo.org but in the future maemo.nokia.com

This is why maemo.org should contain the rules to use the maemo.org logo
(decided by the community respecting the Maemo trademark) and why we are not in
a hurry publishing just yet a new Maemo trademark in maemo.org.

Just comment that having svg format logo is separate issue from updating
trademark text. We just need to have scalable logo for our documentation and
marketing purposes.

maemo.org logo in SVG

OK, I yanked the primary logo out of the svg, hopefully this will work OK. It
plays nice with WebKit and Firefox here, so it should be good.
Comment 7 Jarmo Tikka (reporter) nokia 2008-10-08 12:03:43 UTC
Thanks about very useful and fast actions Ryan :). New SVG version seems to
work at least with all browsers so propably it is now in some "standard"
format. We will take this SVG version as basis for our maemo release
documentation.

I will close this bug when somebody updates (and fixes :) also trademark page
where we need to have official logos available (because logos are part of
trademark).
Comment 8 Quim Gil nokia 2008-10-08 12:11:58 UTC
But Jarmo, the subject mentions the "maemo logo" and what Ryan is providing is
a "maemo.org logo". Which are different. The official documentation shouldn't
have the maemo.org logo (unless you want to document it) ;) and about
marketing activities they need to be initiated anyway by the Maemo community.

"Maemo" as such is written as text, if needed (covers etc) in Nokia fonts and
colors. Contact Peter for more information.
Comment 9 Jarmo Tikka (reporter) nokia 2008-10-08 12:17:08 UTC
I am hally not to update logo for maemo release documentatin but then we have
to have also those maemo logos (in addition to mameo.org logos) in that
trademark page (btw I do not know any product having two different logos :).
Just let me know what logo maemo release docs need to use and which trademark
they use.

maemo.org logo in PNG

Adding a PNG for good measure.

Correcting summary to fit with the content of the bug.

> (btw I do not know any product having two different logos :).

The product is called Maemo and if you wish the logo is "Maemo" written with
Nokia fonts and colors e.g. the first slide at
http://flors.wordpress.com/2008/09/20/how-maemo-approaches-open-source/

maemo.org doesn't refer to a Nokia product, but to an independent community.
Comment 13 Jarmo Tikka (reporter) nokia 2008-10-08 12:43:40 UTC
Sorry but we cannot use text as logo because we cannot be sure we have all
needed fonts etc always available. So are you proposing that we just remove
logo from release docs?
Comment 14 Jarmo Tikka (reporter) nokia 2008-10-08 13:00:35 UTC
Changed target milestone to Diablo maintenance.

Get a png out of that text and you are done.
Comment 16 Jarmo Tikka (reporter) nokia 2008-10-08 13:37:32 UTC
That will then be our new maemo logo (hopefully in svg format :) and it needs
to be approved and attached to some trademark it trademark is different from
current one. E.g. also this trademark issue needs to be solved.
Personally I have no plans or time to start creating new logo and trademark for
maemo. Creating those once was enough for me :).
Comment 17 Quim Gil nokia 2008-10-08 13:40:16 UTC
So, I'll say this once more: there is no Maemo logo and the Maemo trademark
will have no logo tied to it.

As said many times, Peter and the marketing team is taking care of this
trademark update and you don't need to spend a minute of your time.
Comment 18 Jarmo Tikka (reporter) nokia 2008-10-08 13:43:58 UTC
I changed target milestone for Diablo maintenance I suppose that is ok schedule
wise?
Comment 19 Jarmo Tikka (reporter) nokia 2008-11-27 13:40:09 UTC
This has now been fixed for next Diablo release documentation (final version).
