Description Ryan Abel (reporter) maemo.org 2008-07-27 03:13:45 UTC
SOFTWARE VERSION:
4.2008.23-14

STEPS TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM:

1. Install or enable Extras.
2. Attempt to update the repositories.

EXPECTED OUTCOME:
All repositories refresh successfully

ACTUAL OUTCOME:
Extras fails to refresh with:

>Err http://repository.maemo.org diablo/free Packages
> Sub-process gzip returned an error code (1)

> Failed to fetch http://repository.maemo.org/extras/dists/diablo/free/binary-armel/Packages.gz
> Sub-process gzip returned an error code (1)
> Failed to fetch http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel/dists/diablo/free/binary-armel/Packages.gz
> Sub-process gzip returned an error code (1)
> Failed to fetch http://repository.maemo.org/extras/dists/chinook/free/binary-armel/Packages.gz
> Sub-process gzip returned an error code (1)

REPRODUCIBILITY:
Always, tried about a dozen times over the last 6 hours.

OTHER COMMENTS:
Looks like a problem with the compressed packages list.

Have had this problem on both my N800 and N810, neither of which have any kind
of extra apps installed or modifications made. Both are running diablo.

The same problem briefly also happened for the repositories "Nokia Catalogue"
and "Nokia Catalogue (3rd Party Software)", but then went away. It hasn't gone
away with "Maemo Extras".

A bit more of information, the problem is because the error explained in the
mailing list of maemo-users:
http://lists.maemo.org/pipermail//maemo-users/2008-July/022136.html
To see this error go to:
http://repository.maemo.org/extras/dists/diablo/free/binary-armel/Packages.gz

And a workaround to experienced users:
1) Download
http://repository.maemo.org/extras/dists/diablo/free/binary-armel/Packages
2) Copy the Packages file to
/var/lib/apt/lists/repository.maemo.org_extras_dists_diablo_free_binary-armel_Packages
3) Not to do apt-get update or refresh the application-manager

I've contacted Ferenc, he will look at this as soon as possible.

When I use 4.1 as Distribution instead of diablo and 4.0 instead of chinook the
AppMgr has no problem with the refresh. So I guess it's just the gz files which
got munged somehow.

 Hope this helps - Phil

This is a caching network problem again. Those files are simply outdated in the
caches and this current version got to the caches when I tried some workarounds
for the DNS misconfiguration (see #3500).

http://stage.maemo.org/extras/dists/chinook/free/binary-armel/Packages.gz gives
the correct file, if you want to bypass the caches. I have no access to refresh
the caches now, so we got to wait until the morning...

What a wonderful weekend it was ;)
Comment 6 Marcell Lengyel maemo.org 2008-07-27 22:08:53 UTC
I invalidated the cache, and now the Packages.gz files are ok again.
