Description Eric Warnke (reporter) maemo.org 2008-07-13 17:02:51 UTC
SOFTWARE VERSION: 4.2008.23-14
(Control Panel > General > About product)

STEPS TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM: Open a page and attempt to select a block of
text by stylus or finger.

EXPECTED OUTCOME: Text would become highlighted as a selection.

ACTUAL OUTCOME: Scrolling

REPRODUCIBILITY: Always
(always/sometimes/once)

EXTRA SOFTWARE INSTALLED:

OTHER COMMENTS:
This appears to be another change in diablo, but I can't be positive. It
prevents useful bookmarklets like "Note this" ( google notebook ), "Add to
calendar" ( Gcal ), "Quick Add" ( Remember the milk ), and more from working
because it expects to be able to pull the text selection from the page. As far
as I can tell, short of "Select All" and single word, there is no way to make a
selection.

As a matter of UI, why even allow double-click selections at all if all you can
select is a single word?

Text selection works exactly as it did in Chinook here.

Note, the (Control Panel > General > About Product) and (always/sometimes/once)
are merely guidelines for use when filing a bug, they are _NOT_ to be left in
the final bug submission.

I'm pretty sure this is INVALID. You do know that you double-tap-drag to select
text in the browser (i.e., quick, tap, tap-drag), right?
Comment 3 Neil MacLeod maemo.org 2008-07-14 01:28:55 UTC
I'd definitely say this is invalid - in fact for me the reverse of this bug is
often the case, which is that when I go to scroll a browser page by dragging it
with either my finger or stylus I end up selecting bl**dy text... sometimes
it's impossible to drag the page at all! This is with an N810/Diablo.

Going OT here but if the touchscreen can't reliably distinguish between a drag
(for scrolling) and double-tap (for text selection) then please please consider
making text selection a modal option accessed via the menu (or give us this
modal behaviour as an option) as I'm pretty sure more people want to scroll
than want to select text... the current semi-random behaviour when dragging has
made me want to throw the N810 out of the window on several occassions.

Yep, I'm the original submitter and I will concede this one... it's my bad.

I would say that this is a documentation issue though since the only source of
information I could find on the topic was internettablettalk.com

Go to the Menu -> Help -> Web Browser -> Web browser and see the section titled
"Copy text from a web page"

You might take a look at bug 3628 (add "select text" checkbox in "edit"
sub-menu) proposing a mode for this.

(Sorry for the noise...)
