Description Ryan Abel (reporter) maemo.org 2008-06-26 00:38:42 UTC
SOFTWARE VERSION:
4.2008.23-14

STEPS TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM:

1. Open Application manager.
2. Tap the Application manager's menu.
3. Tap "Tools".
4. Tap "Application catalog..."

EXPECTED OUTCOME:
User sees an entry for "maemo.org Extras".

ACTUAL OUTCOME:
User sees "maemo Extras".

REPRODUCIBILITY:
Always

OTHER COMMENTS:
Based on the discussion in the Maemo brand
(https://wiki.maemo.org/Task:Maemo_brand) subtask from the brainstorm, maemo is
incorrect in all cases. As Extras is really a community repository, the "maemo
Extras" entry should really be renamed to "maemo.org Extras".

Mmm all the Maemo/maemo.org branding discussion happened when Diablo code and
materials were well coocked and ready to go. From my point of view it is ok to
have an amnesty on Diablo to let it go with the until now usual setting and
enforce the new branding for Fremantle as an official requirement.

Then again, if this is trivial for Marius and there is a SSU for the
Application Manager at some point, why not including this fix.

Yes, this is fine.

I suspect it is.

One point, though, should we perhaps go with "Extras" instead of "maemo.org
Extras"? I'm not sure "maemo.org" adds much of value for most users and
"Extras" is a little cleaner from the branding perspective.

"Extras" as it is works for me as well. Resolving.

It's actually "maemo Extras" currently. So things will still need to be
updated. ;)
Comment 5 Quim Gil nokia 2009-02-03 21:23:13 UTC
Indeed, it says "maemo Extras".

But before filing an internal bug, let me check with Peter/Jussi to know their
opinion about the ideal name for this catalog.

Updating version info
Comment 7 Andre Klapper maemo.org 2009-05-21 11:50:39 UTC
FIXED in Fremantle.
Comment 8 Andre Klapper maemo.org 2009-07-14 13:37:56 UTC
Fix should be included in Fremantle SDK beta 2 hence updating Target Milestone.
If you are the reporter of this bug: Feel free to verify the fix if possible.
Comment 9 Ryan Abel (reporter) maemo.org 2009-10-12 22:50:47 UTC
Currently says "Maemo Extras", which isn't correct according to the branding.
I'd still prefer "Extras" but I guess feel free to close it again if "Maemo
Extras" is what Nokia's decided on. :\
Comment 10 Quim Gil nokia 2009-11-11 14:00:44 UTC
The catalog will be named "maemo.org Applications", which is totally
descriptive.

The fix will be applied one of these days and will be released with the first
maintenance release.

Yet another new name for "that repository that's on maemo.org". Great.

Except that every website and its brother tells users to use the "(Maemo(.org))
Extras" repository. How is that supposed to be fixed? Tell all bloggers to
change their posts?
Comment 13 Christian Dywan 2009-11-11 17:25:05 UTC
I second Ralph's concern. People are talking about "Extras" all over the place
already. I don't have strong feelings name-wise but it's going to confuse
people if the names is completely different.

So, I thought this one over today. Here are my objections and why I'm not going
to back down on this issue. :)

First, "Applications" is a misnomer. A large chunk of the content in Extras is
nothing of the sort. Widgets, applets, themes, backgrounds and other
personalization miscellanea are not "applications" and arguably nor are games
or utilities. Calling the whole repository "applications" just doesn't make
much sense.

Second, we have 4 years of inertia behind the name "Extras". It makes sense for
the content it offers, it's identifiable, and when people go looking on Google
for "maemo.org Extras" they might actually find meaningful information about
the repository. If Nokia chooses to ship "maemo.org Applications" then
practically the /only/ reference to it will be on the device. Nearly every
other source on the internet will refer to Extras. When people go and see "Hey,
you can get lots of cool applications from Extras!" then go on their device and
see "maemo.org Applications" they're going to wonder where they can get this
"Extras".

Finally, there's this whole new definition of openness that Nokia seems to be
working towards lately. It's in the "unilateral discussion-free decision
making" school of thought. It's worrisome, it's irritating, it's hypocritical
and it's sapping my will and energy to continue putting effort into this
platform. It's also off-topic here so I'll take it to the mailing list at some
point. I'd just like everybody at Nokia to think about the harm they're doing
to the platform and the community while they're making decisions like these. :)
Comment 15 Ryan Abel (reporter) maemo.org 2009-11-12 01:53:21 UTC
There's also another point here. The catalog is /community-owned/, and having
Nokia unilaterally decide to name it something else seems to go against the
spirit of that.
Comment 16 Quim Gil nokia 2009-11-12 09:45:14 UTC
Mmm is this wording so important? Most users won't even see it since the
repository will be enabled by default in the Application Manager soon and I
doubt many users will go through

Application Manager -> Menu -> Application catalogs

which is the only place where this string is shown.

"Extras" is actually not that visible for end users going to maemo.org either:

http://maemo.org/ talks about Downloads

http://maemo.org/downloads/Maemo5/ also alks about "Downloads" and has a
mention under "OS & SDK", linking to http://wiki.maemo.org/Uploading_to_Extras
that is actually "Uploading to Extras-devel". Needs update and probably is not
even a good idea to have a link for developers there.

So you are right in one thing: "Applications" is not accurate. Nor needed after
clicking "Application Manager" (icon), "Application Manager" (menu) and
"Application catalogs" (menu item).

So let's call it simply "maemo.org", which is simple, easy to understand for
any end user and saves localization work. "Ovi" will appear at some point as
well, which is also a simple and easy to understand source for downloadable
software.

In PR1.1 (2.2009.51-1) now showing 'maemo.org'

Would prefer it to show 'Maemo Extras'

Except for "Maemo Extras" isn't actually accurate (no matter how often people
tend to use it).
