*.maemo.org is too fragile. Not a week goes by without some part of it being broken. Links don't work, garage doesn't answer or is just way too slow, downloads is broken, etc. Not very professional, imo.
It's definitely gone downhill recently. Sometimes on #maemo it's mentioned that it's some known maintenance, but this is rarely communicated ahead of time. A placeholder static site would be very handy when it's being worked on, rather than when it's just fubar (like now with http://garage.maemo.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=1867 as of 2007-11-17T09:02Z)
In the UK, maemo.org is still unavailable at 12:55 GMT on 17-Nov-2007 - it seems to have first disappeared at about 21:00 GMT on 16-Nov-2007. That's well over 12 hours downtime. If this was planned maintenance - where was the prior notice? If this was an unexpected outage beyond your control (again), it might be time for some redundancy.

If maemo.org is to be the entry point for new users to access the application content (downloads) and other information about the device, then we just cannot ever have more than 5 minute downtimes. It's not good for the end-users. Maemo org was down starting from friday evening and went up again some time in the evening of saturday. Not so nice. I don't know about the details about the other issues mentioned by Andrew and Tuomas, but at least we should make sure that the servers aren't down. This is something that the server hosting company should do / support for Nokia. Also, if there is development work done, that can be done on a separate server - be that server process or physical server. It's not nice to go down for hours long maintenance breaks either.
Ahh.. I was actually overly optimistic. http://maemo.org/downloads/ isn't still working at the time I'm writing this.
fwiw, dated project portions of garage can be found at: http://timeless.justdave.net/mxr-test/garage/source/*/www/index.html e.g., http://timeless.justdave.net/mxr-test/garage/source/browser/www/index.html that's updated/synced fairly randomly, i have a big push i need to do on Monday
I believe the combination of OS2008, N810 and bunch of new services on maemo.org (much heavier app catalog, social news, CRM, ...) is mostly behind the performance issues we've been experiencing the last couple of weeks. Some configuration changes were done last weekend to increase server performance, and things look pretty good right now.
How to avoid this kind of downtime in the future updates?
After a fresh install I just went to the new tabletter site, the first thing you see is the ukmp media player.after one click you are clicking the ".install" and that generates a nice error! http://maemo.org/downloads/product/raw/OS2007/ukmp/?get_installfile Funny enough this only shows on the n800 and not on the web-browser. I hope this helps explaining the "fragile" part. --- an other problem goto http://maemo.org/downloads/OS2007/games/ and click on next page the 5 th "game" is midgard "content".
And maemo.org (Midgard CMS part) is slow as hell :)
we just installed the new Midgard caching for https content. hope the US guys can hit the server hard so we can see that the load stays low. i wish you could actually specify the problems instead of saying: 'Links don't work, garage doesn't answer or is just way too slow, downloads is broken, etc.' please open more bug reports with more specific requests. i liked that install file comment btw. that was pretty exact. we are experimenting quite a lot with the servers as we have no luxury to run a test environment with the same setup. whether it is professional or 'Not very professional' i don't want to comment. that's what we got. we screw up things, we learn and we fix. check all our conversations in the mails, irc channels etc. ranting is nice and easy to do. how about helping?
Because you "are experimenting quite a lot with the servers" and you don't have the "luxury to run a test environment with the same setup", you can close this bug as invalid and I'll try to use some other services that tries to be more stable for my projects.
Resolving this as invalid, since it's a known fact (and most of the issues maemo.org had while reporting this are gone). If some of the specific problems mentioned here still exists, please file a separate bug report for them.
No matter how this specific bug is being "solved", we are currently planning which are the resources and configuration needed to have a robust infrastructure. Users/developers like Tuomas are pointing out that currently maemo.org is not as stable as it should. Ferenc is also right pointing out that our team hasn't got all the elements needed to offer a performance that would satisfy users like Tuomas while doing all the stuff we are doing currently at *.maemo.org There must be a solution in between and we are defining it.
Closing. Bug has been marked as INVALID. If problem/bug still exists, please reopen it with proper comments.
