Description Tim Samoff (reporter) maemo.org 2007-03-30 20:23:19 UTC
Many AJAX apps contain the functionality of multi-selecting objects by holding
down the CTRL key (on a PC; or Command or Option on a Mac)... Currently, I don't
think there's a way to do this on the N800. It would be very helpful to have
this functionality. Maybe using one of the hardware buttons while clicking?

It'd be great to have this multi-select functionality in file manager, too.

not sure what you're talking about. just tap on as many <option>elements in a
<select multiple> as you like.

please provide an actual url and actual steps to reproduce (feel free to
specify a desktop browser and steps to reproduce).

Multi-select seems to work somewhat fine in File Manager and other apps that
use the (GTK?) list control, although it's not obvious that one can do it.

To make multiple selections in the file manager, for example:
1. Open a folder with more than 4 files
2. Touch a file, hold, drag stylus up/downwards until 2 or more files are
selected, and release.
3. Repeat to make more multi-selections.

It should be the same way for web apps, i think.

The problem with this UI design:
- When selecting for first time in step 2, there must be MORE THAN ONE item
selected, or it becomes impossible to move to step 3
- Adding single items to the multi-selection is very tedious. One would have to
touch the file, drag stylus until it covers a second unrelated item, drag it
back until it covers just the item needed, and then release.
- There is no way to undo selections.

Correct. Likwise, selecting more than one item in a list, but not items that
are next to eachother (i.e., on a PC, this would be done by holding the Control
key while selecting), is impossible. (In fact, this is sort of a bug in the
Hildon File Manager as well, so maybe I should report it.)

In any case, the ability to multi-select (either consecutively or arbitrarily)
would be preferable.

Another unsubstantiated comment and i will mark this report invalid.

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; X11; Linux armv6l; U) Opera 8.5 [en_US]
Tablet browser 0.0.12 RX-34_2007SE_4.2007.21-8
steps that work for me:
1. load https://bugs.maemo.org/query.cgi?format=advanced
2. in Component: tap Accounts
3. tap Audio player

expected and actual results: both Accounts and Audio player are selected.

For the last time, please provide steps to reproduce.

And yes, imo file manager / the maemo "platform" are buggy wrt selection.

I think the right thing tm is probably a custom modal widget as implemented for
e61i (webkit) and iPhone. However, we have no resources / time, and the last
thing i want is a bigger ui specification. Among other things, it'd enable
searching within long lists.

i'm back from vacation monday, although i can't say i'm looking forward to
additional comments. please don't forget to include your useragent. if the site
in question is dynamic, please don't hesitate to attach a simplified testcase.

I'm going to mark this as FIXED. I've tested a number of AJAX selectable list
scenarios and they all worked. If they didn't, the issue lies in the list code
(i.e., Javascript), not MicroB.
