Description Jason Byrne (reporter) 2011-01-30 21:32:38 UTC
SOFTWARE VERSION:
(Settings > General > About product)

EXACT STEPS LEADING TO PROBLEM:
(Explain in detail what you do (e.g. tap on OK) and what you see (e.g. message
Connection Failed appears))
1. install CSSU per wiki instructions, reboot, etc...
2. swipe from desktop to desktop, switch between task manager and (any) apps,
use (any) apps etc...

EXPECTED OUTCOME:

smooth, relibable transitions, repainting, etc... in apps, switching between
apps, and task manager, etc... as with PR 1.3

ACTUAL OUTCOME:

desktop transitions stutter significantly, apps seem to stutter during keyboard
or touchscreen input, window transitions seem to get 'stuck', windows seem to
stop repainting in the middle of transitions, etc...

REPRODUCIBILITY:
(always, less than 1/10, 5/10, 9/10)

always

EXTRA SOFTWARE INSTALLED:

none, but I reported bug 11828, which was marked as a duplicate of bug 11813,
and I ran (as root): gconf-schemas --register hildon-desktop-keys.schemas as
noted in the feedback for bug 11813 to get desktop keyboard interaction working
again.

Hmm, WORKSFORME. Is it that bad immediately after a reboot, or does it degrade
over time?

Could you attach the output of `dpkg -l', `ps axfwww' and `uptime' when it's
slow and stuttery?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, it was _really_ bad, to the point that some apps would never finish
repainting, and I'd use Ctrl-Backspace to try to get out of apps that were
partially repainted, appearing to not be accepting input, etc...

I saw the 'gconf-schemas --register hildon-desktop-keys.schemas' fix for the
desktop/keyboard a few hours ago, ran that as root, rebooted, and almost
immediately noticed the stuttering, as I just swiped a couple of panels on the
desktop to find a contact shortcut, to send a text message.

when sending a text message, the text input at the bottom didn't even finish
painting, and I tapped the screen a few times to try to get it to respond, but
ended up closing and reopening the conversations/text window a few times before
I finally got a fully painted textbox at the bottom of the window.

also, while using the task manager to switch between apps, I ran into an
interesting repaint where the task manager and desktop transition was stuck,
where part of the screen was fading out for the transition, but the desktop had
not completely repainted, and it was stuck in this transition until I again
tried Ctrl-Backspace a few tiems to try to force a change.

I've never seen anything close to this stuttering behavior (n900 owner since
last January, have run every PR version since the phone was released), until I
installed the CSSU and ran the gconf-schemas fix.

i also noticed another bizarre 'modest' attachment bug (willl submit a report
shortly) while I was just trying to email myself a copy of my dpkg -l output,
so I'll just scp the file to my desktop and attach the dpkg-l output
momentarily.

BTW, I've rebooted the n900, and things seem to be ok again for now, but I'll
provide 'ps axfwww' and 'uptime' output if/when I notice these issues again.

I'm closing this as RESOLVED INVALID for now (makes bug tracking a bit easier),
feel free to reopen the bug if you encounter the problem again. :)
