maemo.org Bugzilla – Bug 10468
Browser - [Shift]+[Up] not working with separate [Fn] press - several european Keyboard Layouts not supported
Last modified: 2010-06-07 18:01:29 UTC
You need to
before you can comment on or make changes to this bug.
PR1.2 - 10.2010.19-1
EXACT STEPS LEADING TO PROBLEM:
1. Take a N900 with european Keyboard Layout (at example german, french or
italian) with only 2 Coursor keys
2. Open a long website, at example http://talk.maemo.org
3. swipe several times over the screen to scroll down
4. press the [blue arrow] to force the coursor Buttons in up/down mode
5. press and hold [shift]
6. press the [left/up] Button
The website scrolls to the top of the page
the website scrolls left
EXTRA SOFTWARE INSTALLED:
nothing releated to this bug, no browser plugins
While pressing and holding down all three Buttons (the blue Arrow, Shift and
the Left/Up Key) at the same time it works. But it's hard to do.
Press the Blue arrow once activates normaly the blue symbols. And it should do
the trick before pressing shift and up.
On my device there is no difference by pressing left with or without the shift
button pressed together. Perhaps a fast fix could be to simply assign
[shift]+[left] to the same function as [shift]+[up] and [shift]+[right] to the
same function as [shift]+[down]
Of course I would prefer to have 4 coursor keys, but Nokia had other plans.

You have to press 3 Buttons at once: [Fn] + [Shift] and [Up] or [Down]
It's not very handy for a often used feature.
I found in a post at the forum that the [Fn] lock is only working at normal
input fields: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=695480&postcount=251
So it was never designated to use [Fn] lock for normal windows input. (and I
guess we shouldn't change this)
The possibility of [Fn] + [Up] was discussed before at the Brainstorm system.
And the releated talk at maemo.org.
I guess this information was for the developer not visible because of a missing
tracking system similar to bugs.maemo.org. It was lost somewere in the
In my opinion the best and fastest fix:
Simply assign [shift]+[left] to the same function as [shift]+[up] and
[shift]+[right] to the same function as [shift]+[down] to activate this feature
on all devices because of the missing seperate up and down keys.
shift-left/shift-down are used for selections, we can't steal them. to the
extent that shift-up/shit-down reach the browser, they too need to be used for
hopefully we will be able to look into this, however please don't expect us to

Sorry for the noise. Only to be clear:
The [Shift]+[Up] and [Shift]+[Down] are working at the moment on international
devices with 4 Coursor Keys. Yes, you're right. It's used for text selecting
and the [Shift]+[Up] is not working when a textbox has the focus. Nobody is
expecting to change this and break anything. :-)
When there has no textbox or input field a focus the coursor Keys are used to
move the webpage around and on Devices with 4 Coursor keys [Shift] + [up] or
[down] is used to go to the top or the bottom of a page.
The [left] and [right] keys has no special function using it with [Shift]
together. On the International and on localized Keyboard layouts.
So, simply add the same Functionallity to [Shift] + [Left] to reach the top of
a page like on international devices with [Shift] + [Up]. It works there also
only if no textbox has a focus. As it should be. :-)
