Description Nirav Thakker (reporter) 2010-04-28 13:39:21 UTC
SOFTWARE VERSION:
(Settings > General > About product)

EXACT STEPS LEADING TO PROBLEM:
1. on the desktop, click the battery icon, this displays a menu list
2. select internet connectivity, select an operator supported network, eg
GPRS/EDGE network
3. the phone connects to the network
4. use the internet for a while and the phone loses internet connection, the
SIM Card not inserted ICON appears.

EXPECTED OUTCOME:
The phone is supposed to remain connected to the internet as long as the user
does not attempt to disconnect the network or there is no signal from the
operator. more over, even if there is a disconnection, the phone is supposed to
keep the SIM Card in a recognized state allowing the user to make and receive
calls/send and receive SMS.

ACTUAL OUTCOME:
the phone disconnects at the first attempt to connect to the internet and
derecognizes the sim rendering the phone unusable. the user can neither
make/receive any calls nor send/receive any sms.

REPRODUCIBILITY:
always

EXTRA SOFTWARE INSTALLED:
none

OTHER COMMENTS:
initially i was under the impression that this was happening as a result of the
extra software that was installed. hence i reflashed my device to remove all
the clutter and keep only the basic software as needed. i am still continuing
to face this problem despite this fix.

Hi Nirav, thanks for reporting this!

Can you please provide a syslog when this happens? See
http://wiki.maemo.org/Documentation/devtools/maemo5/syslog and
http://wiki.maemo.org/Documentation/devtools/maemo5#Installation for more
information.
If you are not used to Linux, after creating the syslog file you can copy the
syslog file to those folders that are visible in the Maemo File Manager by:
  * Starting X Terminal
  * cp /var/log/syslog /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/
After that you can find the file in the Maemo File Manager by going to Nokia
N900 > Documents.

Also, which provider and country is the SIM card from, and how old is the SIM
card?

How often has this happened to you already?

Has it also happened that the SIM card is not recognized already when booting
the N900?
Comment 2 Nirav Thakker (reporter) 2010-04-29 08:43:47 UTC
Hi Andre,
I don't think i would be able to provide a SYSLOG now. the phone has totally
stopped recognising my sim. earlier, reflashing my device would allow me to get
the sim card recognised, however, this is not happening now. i would attempt
re-flashing the phone again today. the flashing fails at the programming cmt
step. :(
The SIM Card was replaced for this very reason and is hence fairly new, less
than 2 weeks now. The SIM is from India and the service provider is Airtel. I
am successfully using this SIM without any issues on my other phone, the N95.
This happens to me almost every time now. earlier that was not the case but
post March, this happens every day and every time. i am not able to retain a
successful GPRS connection at all.
well, now the n900 does not recognise the SIM right from the boot process.

Hmm... syslog request still stands, but can you start X Terminal and provide
here the output of these two commands when your SIM card is not recognized?

dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=com.nokia.phone.SIM
/com/nokia/phone/SIM Phone.Sim.get_sim_status

dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=com.nokia.phone.net
/com/nokia/phone/net Phone.Net.get_registration_status
Comment 4 Nirav Thakker (reporter) 2010-04-30 20:54:24 UTC
just realised, the reason the SIM Card is not recognised is because the phone
has lost its IMEI details. For no reason whatsoever. I tried all methods to
check for the IMEI but the same is not appearing. Now this is my understanding
of the loss network and display of SIM Card not present.
As per the laws of my Country, India, no phone can work without a valid IMEI.
Hence when the phone has no IMEI, the service provider through the SIM card can
reject the phone.
Each time I connect to the net, for a while, the phone was losing out its IMEI
info causing the network and the service provider to reject the phone. This is
the reason the phone was displaying the message "SIM Card not Inserted".
I guess, the bug details now have to be changed to that of losing the IMEI at
the connection of GPRS/EDGE network.
Please suggest.

This time the phone had a cellular radio network and was able to connect to the
GPRS network, however after each connection and usage for a short period, the
SIM was suddenly rejected.

Internal comment:
"This smells like a hardware problem in that specific phone.
Missing IMEI indicates that N900 did not get it from Cellular Modem = there is
no way the phone could work. Also from LOG I can see that SIM connection goes
up and down which also indicates cellular connection being shaky ==> Faulty
Hardware."

Please either contact Nokia Care services via www.nokia.com or contact the
company who sold the product to you as hardware issues are out of scope for
maemo.org Bugzilla.
Comment 11 Nirav Thakker (reporter) 2010-05-12 09:17:38 UTC
i am not sure if this is actually a hardware issue. reason-> the flaky cellular
connection shows up only when i connect to the GPRS.
